Interesting week…

We still have a lot of work to do, but at least the team is playing a little bit better lately. I feel like we have good energy back, and I feel like the team is getting its confidence level back. We still expect to win every game.

Last week was interesting because we had some roster moves. Those are tough, but we tried to keep things light in the clubhouse. That’s mostly guys like Mike Cameron and Jason Kendall; they’re really good at that. By seeing them and playing with them, I learned that it’s good to always be upbeat. Once you see guys like that, you start feeling the same way.

We’re still in it. I said the other day that if some people don’t think we are, then we’ll just have to play for the fans who still believe. As a player, you have to have some kind of belief or you wouldn’t be playing. But on a day to day basis, you don’t even worry about the races. You just keep playing and see what happens.

One more thing — I was watching some Track and Field this week and I have to say that Usain Bolt is fast. We have Alcides Escobar on the team now, and he’s fast, but he wouldn’t have a chance of beating Bolt on the track. Home plate to first base, maybe. If Bolt knew how to hit, I’d have to go with him.

Escobar has been pretty fun to watch. He’s brought some good energy, too, and we’re just going to have to try and keep it going.

Until next time
-Prince

you aint gonna be smelling any scent of the playoffs if you can’t even beat the last place Pittsburgh Pirates. How about them bucs?! Thanks for winning me money in the HR derby BTW. I still hate you though 🙂

You’ve got enough people that like you – you should be happy you have some haters in Pittsburgh. Let’s go bucs!!

Prince, I have enjoyed your two posts in your new blog; was happy to see it. I know it can’t be easy, as you said in your first post, to start something new when the team is not playing at its best — and some of the folks you started the season with are in the minors, are injured, or have been traded away. I know this is reality in MLB; I’m sure you know it far better than I, having grown up around baseball and knowing many, many good baseball players while becoming an outstanding player yourself.

One thing I’ve been happy to see this year, Prince; your fielding has improved markedly. I don’t know if this is due to Willie Randolph’s help or not; is this something you’d be willing to expound upon (talk more about)? How have you improved so much this year in the field, considering you’ve also improved your plate discipline at the same time?

Other than that, I leave you with this one thought (considering I’ve been a Brewers fan since their inception in 1970, though I was very young then) — no team is as bad as they are in their worst game(s), while no team is as good as they are in their best game(s). Perhaps this is due to my late husband’s Buddhist influence, but I believe very strongly that the truth is somewhere in the middle — in the Brewers case, I think the talent is there, but the injuries (especially to core members of the pitching staff) have made things appear worse than they really are. The trick, if there is one, is not to deny reality — it’s to say that this reality isn’t all there is, and that better days are coming.

Please don’t let any ignorant comments you may receive here, or anywhere else, dampen your enthusiasm for baseball. I think it’s that enthusiasm — on display for all to see at the HR Derby this year, and in your inside-the-park HR last year — that makes you such a wonderful player to watch.

Eyy, Prince. I was thinking about what you said re; Usain Bolt and base running. Well, I didn’t choose the baseball avenue when I looked this up, but I was curious about Cricket. It’s so popular in the West Indies, and I looked around for any information I could as to whether he’d played, or not. As it turns out, he was a cricketer. Mostly a bowler. He’d be so fast! Bolt isn’t playing cricket, now, and it’ll probably stay that way. Manny Ramirez is a good batter! There’s a video shot during spring training ’09 with all the gear on. A team from NZ(?) came down to put on a clinic. They said Manny caught on quickly. So; Ramirez vs. Bolt… sounds like a video game! Usain makes other runners look like they are in a video game.
With Escobar… if he’s as fast as Rickey Henderson was in the late 90’s, he’s the fastest guy in baseball. I’m talking Henderson with the flu playing on the Mets in the NCLS vs. the Braves in ’99.

I love your positive attitude! I expect to see you in the playoffs. The team just needs to work on pitching and we’re right back in it. Any idea when JJ will be back? I love watching you play and hope you have many years in Milwaukee.

Prince, thanks for doing the blog. As a young little leaguer who looks up to you, I was wondering how I may go about getting your autograph?

    Prince –
I’ve noticed some differences in your hitting with Cameron’s bat. Does it have a bigger sweet spot? Those foul shots last night were crazy! Ultimately, the home run last night ended up in that area. Wondering what kinds of adjustments you are having to make with (what looks like) a lighter, more hollow bat. And it looks shorter…
What’s your take, so far? Weeks’s or Cam’s?

p.s. I watch you guys until the last at-bat every game, but it’s getting to be surreal to see the losses. Please win a game… sooner the better! I’d be so happy; especially against the pirate ship sailing around the Great Lakes as we speak.

    hey, Prince –

We need a blog from you on this interesting 2nd game in the series (8/29). It had a little bit of everything, including some good defense and a good variety of hits. You and Escobar connected several times. Good playing, all around. Hope Yo’ is okay, and I’m glad he at least got a no-decision. Thanks for the entertaining game!

    Hi Prince,

Being a fan I actually like that a small market team would send down Hardy for Escobar even though he wasn’t actually doing poorly by league shortstop standards, only his own. In order to secure another year of team cost savings for his services. I’ve read that he was a bit put out by that but I would guess that the team is not allowed to publicly tell him that is the reason because of the union. I know you guys want to get paid but as a fan, we want to win, so, if you do read this, please let him know that we like him and hope the cost will allow him to actually stay here longer from out perspective. And tell him he has been and amazing shortstop but if A-Rod can move to 3rd for a shortstop that’s not actually better then him, JJ can do it too!

Thanks for blogging, people love it.

Hi Prince, Thank you for being you! We enjoy watching you!

    Prince,

I have to say you are the man. You are truly a joy to watch. You have such determination, focus and a good attitude. You are one of the reasons I love to watch the Brewers. What I really love is how excited you get for others when they do well, as well as for yourself. You are a team player and the Brewers play like a team, that isn’t always the case. Congrats on the RBI and walk record – what a accomplishment !! You were awesome in the home run derby, even my dog Onyx was cheering for you. Coming to the game on Tuesday, hope you, Bush and the team can get us a win against the Cubs. I hope you will be with the Brewers for many years to come and that we can keep all your talented teammates. I will always be a fan. Good luck the rest of the season. Can’t wait to see what next year brings.

It would seem that every team but the Reds are hurting in the NL Central. What!!
As far as we’re concerned we just need to get everyone in the dugout and the bullpen on the same page.
The gel of 2008 has severly worn off and left finger pointing. So, as a lifelong fan, I too will point fingers and say why are our outfielders not running after balls in the corners (jogging is bush league!) and Corey where is your head at?? A double and a run scored on a little league poke (Fri), cmon, your BETTER than that!
My Brewers are taking over the “Heart Attack Pack” moniker…

Where, oh, where have the real players gone
The guys with guts beards and hearts
When small salaries and wallbanging hits
Made us fans from the start.

As a lifelong loyal Brewer fan I am happy to see the team start hitting a bit better with runners on! If we can get some solid bullpen support (ala Rollie Fingers) although Axford has a very unique mustache, maybe all the bullpen should go with the seventies p**nstar look. It can’t hurt!
Thank you Mr. Hart for stepping up your play and making re-think my comments of a few weeks ago….maybe we don’t need Molly and the Kid back just yet!!
Glad to see Cappy back, will be even gladder(sic) when he does well…get an Axford mustache Chris!

    Go Crew!!
